The Timeline of the North West Mounted Police
The North West Mounted Police has been around for 139 years! It was started on May 23, 1873 by the Canadian government. The North West Mounted Police is still going on but nowadays it is called the RCMP. RCMP stands for Royal Canadian Mounted Police. It was changed to that name in 1919 by the Queen for doing such important work. She gave them an official Royal designation.
What was going on before the North West Mounted Police was formed? And important facts!
Imagine people were trading all sorts of things just for whiskey. The Canadian government wanted a group of people to make sure Western Canada was safe. To get into the North West Mounted Police you had to be between the ages of 18 and 40. At one point the North West Mounted Police helped the First Nations people including Chief Crowfoot who was the main leader of most First Nation tribes. James Macleod was part of the North West Mounted Police. He got paid 75 cents a day. His uniform was bright red and anyone could see him from kilometers away.
The March West
The North West Mounted Police marched west on July 8, 1874. The small force of men moved out of Dufferin, Manitoba and headed west toward the junction of the Bow and Belly Rivers over 800 miles away. This spot is now in southern Alberta. When they arrived some of the men wrote their names on stone by the Milk River. These names can still be seen in Writing-On-Stone Provincial Park.
The NWMP Changes the West
When the whiskey traders heard that the North West Mounted Police where coming they shut their businesses down. So from that day on there has never been any more whiskey traders in southern Alberta.
In the 1800’s and 1900’s the First Nation tribes were having problems with their land. They were not getting treated fairly and everyone was wanting to take their land. The North West Mounted Police became friends with the First Nation tribes and helped protect them.
In the settlement time lots of people from the USA and Europe were coming to southern Alberta to live. Lots of people at that time were getting into fights. It was not safe for the new settlers. The North West Mounted Police stopped the fighting and made it safer for settlers.
The Adventurous North West Mounted Police Values
Just like any other type of group or person the North West Mounted Police had values. It turns out that two of these are the same as STS; Integrity and Commitment. The reason they had values is because they wanted to do their job in a special manner and be trusted. The North West Mounted Police had 6 main values; Integrity, Honesty, Professionalism, Compassion, Accountability and Respect. The North West Mounted Police were open and used honest communication since they wanted to make the people they were helping happy.
