wasyl eleniak
What Was Happening In Canada When the Ukrainian Settlers Came? What was life like when Wasyl Eleniak came to Canada? In 1905, Alberta became part of Canada. Many settlers came from all over the world to farm and ranch in Canada. The CPR railway had just been built. Small communitieswere forming Store clerks were paying famers for their goods they had produced from their farms. The land was filling fast in some parts, but slow in others. Many people first came to Quebec, Ontario and Labrador by boat, then travelled on the railway to Alberta, Saskatchewan and B.C. People worked hard to travel from many different parts of the world to Canada. The famers were often stressed by drought or grasshoppers. Many people were looking for work. When the farmers could not supply their goods, the whole community could be hungry. The land was cheap, and almost everyone was a farmer. Some people traveled by wagon across Canada, sleeping underneath it. People had different ways of homesteading. Some built their houses with sod on the roof and dirt for walls. Some people made log cabins, if they were lucky. And the rich ordered house parts that were already made.
Early Life
Wasyl started his life in a small village called Nebyliw, in the Ukraine. He was born in December 22, 1859. He was the first child to arrive out of four others. Three of the five children survived. In 1883, he was married to his childhood sweetheart, Anna Roshkow. He had a job as a log driver. He had three children, Maria, Fedir and Magda.
Coming to
Canada
In
1890 many people had heard of the country called Canada. He and two other friends traveled to Switzerland to board a ship to the new country. One friend turned back, not having enough money. When they got to Canada, they went to Montreal, and then took the railway to Alberta. The land was free all you had to do was get there. The promise was true, so Wasyl started helping other people with their threshing so he could get money to go back to Ukraine for the rest of his family. It took him two years but he had $200 just enough to get back to Ukraine. He traveled and got his family then traveled back to Canada.
Settling
Wasyl started a ranch with his family having 2 cows, 2 oxen 30 chickens and a wagon and plow. He had milk, eggs and wheat. Some he kept for his family, selling the rest to stores. He had a house with a living room, five bedrooms a kitchen and a cellar.
Beliefs and
Values
Wasyl had three core values. Wasyl valued hard work because he worked hard to move to Canada. He also
worked hard threshing for money to get his family from Ukraine and bring them to Canada. Sometimes it was hard to make money when people where not buying his goods from him which forced him work harder.
Wasyl valued trust because he had to trust a lot of different people who spoke different languages he did not understand to travel from Ukraine to Canada. If you moved to Canada you had the choice of starting a school, running stores or farming and ranching.
Wasyl trusted the people that they were right and kept their promise.
Wasyl valued creativity
because he created many ways of living in Canada. He also created many ways of ranching. He created a new way of life for his family (new language, school, people etc.).
What Did He
Change?
Wasyl was one of the first Ukrainians to come to Canada. He changed the way the Ukrainians lived by acting like a role model and being involved in things. The Ukrainians followed his leadership and soon became an important role in Canada’s history. They are important because they created many ways of living in Canada and increased the Ukrainian population even more than it would have
been in Ukraine. He also spread the Ukrainian culture all over Canada and Canada shared that information with the world.
