the voyageurs
What was the Fur Trade and was it important? The Fur Trade was for trading metal goods
and some food with animal body parts such as skins, meat, horses, and
hides. The forts were usually built beside a river or lakes to catch beavers so that they could
be made into hats or into cotton blankets or clothes .They are also built by
rivers so it’s easier for people to come and trade their stuff .The beaver furs
are the most valuable type of fur {it would be like $100}.The beavers were
mostly made into hats and then they would be shipped to Europe and then sold there. The fur trade changed lots of first nations life’s, like instead of bowls made of bone they got metal pots and pans and so on.
The Voyageurs life style
The Voyagers were hard working men. They traveled 20 hours a day for 21 days in a
row. The Voyageurs wore a sash around their waist, the colors were usually red,
blue, white, green, & yellow these colors each have a meaning .Red is the
historical color, blue & white stand for the metis nation flag, green means
growth & yellow stands for the sun. The Voyageurs wore sacks of fur on
their back, they were about 50-60 pounds, & after they would give the packs
of fur to the Fur Trade so they can make it into something & sell it. The
Voyageurs travel mostly by canoe, & when they paddle they sing songs to keep
the paddle rhythm & to keep company. The Voyageurs wore a red sash
for people to remember all their hard
work they do.
What change did they
make?
If it wasn’t for the Voyageurs the Fur Trade people would of hade to travel a very
long distance & travel across oceans to get all there furs & goods to a
different country all by themselves, & then if the Fur Trade people were
out traveling & someone came in to trade, there wouldn’t be anyone there to
trade. That’s why we should respect all the hard work the Voyageurs did for the
Fur Trade!!!!!
Beliefs & Values
TheVoyageurs hade lots of values but here are just
some. I think the Voyageurs valued hard work because they traveled a very long distance to
get furs or goods to some place no matter what type of weather it is. This is
very hard work. I also think the Voyageurs valued caring because when the
Voyageurs traveled they each helped each other on .They also valued caring
because each Voyageur had a part ,the men usually were the travelers ,the women
did all the big feasts for when they came bake & all the other feasts ,the
children helped the women with the baking. I think
the Voyageurs valued health because they had to be really strong to carry all
the stuff on their bake & they had to be really strong to do all the
paddling .I also think they value health because they always try to keep
active.
