What are Metis?
The Metis started when the French Fur Traders married First Nation women. Their children became known as the Metis. Marriages like this often worked and they stayed together for quite awhile. A great man Louis Riel believed that Metis had their own culture. Louis Riel was right they did have their own cultures. Most Metis lived in the Red River which is now Manitoba. The Metis population grew and grew and when that happened the Red River was known as the biggest community for the Metis. They followed some customs of First Nations like how most Metis and most First Nations went to the Fur Trade. Some of the Metis moved to the Fort Edmonton so they could trade stuff such as fur. The Metis also provided pemmican for some First Nations and so they could trade it in the Fur Trade. They mostly lived their lives alike to how the First Nations did. Metis gave tricks to catching animals to the First Nations and they gave some back.
