chinese workers
Take a journey back in time, across the ocean back to Canada where the interesting story begins. The CPR was formed because Canada (Ontario,Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick) sent John Palliser to check out North West Territories to see if there was any good land. John Palliser came across people in the land and talked with them. When he got back to Canada he asked the Prime Minster John A McDonald if a railway could be built. The Prime Minster approved the plan and called it the “Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR)”.Over by Europe the Europeans found a place called “China.” The Europeans asked the Chinese if they wanted work for them. They promised the Chinese workers that they would get money to buy land in China. The Chinese said “yes” and over 5,000 Chinese came to the new land called “Canada”and started to build the CPR. William Cornelius Van Horne was hired to make the CPR go faster. He also got all the Chinese to do the dangerous part because he did not want to harm his kind. Father Lacombe persuade Chief Crowfoot and his brother Three Bulls that it is fine and the railway would not harm them. It would help them. When the CRP was finished in Craigellachie, British Columbia over 600 Chinese died.
Career
The Chinese workers did many dangerous things during the building of the CPR.
The Chinese workers carried rocks and had to moisten the ground so they could dig. But there were
dynamites and they stepped on them then they would explode. In 1858 gold was found in Fraser River.
Lifestyle
Have you ever wondered what Chinese lived in and traveled in?
Well immigrating on the boat there were no doctors, no medicine and the only food they had was rice. Some people died on the travel on the boat across the ocean because the boat ride was 60 days long.
When they arrived some people settled. After they settled the Chinese would go to work. The Chinese got 10 $ if they worked. The
Chinese also came to Canada because there was war and starvation in Guangdong where most Chinese came from.
Most were men that came. Over 5,000 people came. Over 600 people died.
Beliefs and values
What were the Chinese’s value? I think the Chinese valued hard work because they needed money so they could live a good lifestyle. The Chinese also valued shelter and transportation because when they finished the railway they could stay there and not have to worry because there family could travel on boat to Canada and ride the railway to where all their family was and it would be good because at that time there was war in china.
What change did the Chinese worker make? The Chinese made a change by making the country of Canada bigger and also improve future life (now) by having more reasonable transportation.
