May 3 1873 The Act establishing the North West Mounted Police (NWMP) was first introduced in the House by then Prime Minister John A. Macdonald. James Macleod joined the NWMP in 1873. When the loss of the buffalo came many people started to sell whiskey to make money. The Whiskey did not solve their problems.Traders from Montana were trading whiskey to make money for their family’s Then one day the government found out about the Whiskey trade and sent out the NWMP to shut the whiskey trade down.James knew the Montana people and the blackfoot would not go down without a fight. Fort Macleod was named after James Macleod. The reason why the NWMP existed was so you could feel safe and not feel like you have to lock your door every night just for protection. The reason why people were not attracted to the west was because there was no NWMP to insure the law was followed and to keep them safe from harm.
