Louis Riel
Who are metis? Metis are people who in their past were a French or Scottish boy that married a first nation women. In the 1700s win metis became adults they worked as translators they would
translate first nations from the French or the Scottish so they cod communicate. In the early 1800s most of the metis left their land and moved to the Red River area which we now called Manitoba.
Louis Riel’s life
Louis Riel was born in the Red River on
October 22 1844. At age 14 Louis
Riel left home and traveled to Montreal to study so he cod become a catholic
priest. In 1876 Louis Riels friends secretly sent him to Quebec and Riel went
into a mental hospital. In 1882 he
was happy that he was healthy. Louis Riel married Marguerite Monet and they had
two children.
Is Louis Riel a changmaker and why?
In their time the metis were being frosted
to sell their lands to the Canadian government but the metis people did not want
to give up their land. That is when Louis Riel left Quebec and trailed back to
the Red River to help the metis people.
He started to help the people and some people started to protest against
him. One of those people’s names
was Thomas Scott. He killed Thomas
Scott by getting a group of people to shoot him at the same time.
So, he was wanted for that and he traveled to the United States to escape
from the army of people that were sent to arrest him. He
began to feel sad again about the Metis people leaving their land and starting
to drink more whiskey. So, Louis
Riel went back to the Red River and tried to stop the people from drinking
whiskey. He also gathered a small
army of Metis people to use violence against the government to stop them from
selling their land. Sadly, it
failed and Louis Riel was told by a judge that he would be killed by
hanging. On November
16th, 1885, Louis Riel died. I think that he was doing the
right thing by helping the Metis people because he was a Metis and its wasn’t
fair that they were being forced to lose their
land.
What were his values?
Louis Riel valued his culture, because he was proud to be a
Metis. He was proud to be Metis because he liked to be different and he thought
it was okay to be different. He had a strong belief and faith in God. He believed that if something bad
happened to him or someone else, God would help them.
He believed God was a helper. Louis Riel valued hard work for two reasons. The
first reason is he worked hard to become a Catholic priest.
The second reason is he worked hard to help Metis people to not have to
give up their land.
