Do you know who Chief Crow -Indian -big-foot and treaty 7 is? He had many brothers and sisters. Crowfoot first name was shot close. He was only 5 when his father Istowun-eh'pata (packs a knife) died. So his mother remarried and he was adopted by Blackfoot nation and given the name Kyi-i-staah (Bear Ghost). Later he was given the name Isapo-Muxika (Crowfoot). In his young age there was a disease called smallpox (a very dangerous disease) but his family survived. He was born in 1830 at Blackfoot crossing. He died in 1890 because of tuberculosis
Family and why he made the change he made
Axkahp-say-pi (Attacked Towards Home) and Istowun-eh'pata (packs a knife) were Kainai. Crowfoot and the Cree were enemies. French named Father Albert Lacombe saved him from a Cree attack. Crowfoot became friends with Lacombe. Then he made peace with the Cree and adopted a son named Poundmaker. When someone killed his brother he started a little war.
Crowfoots change
Imagine getting tricked into losing your land. That’s what some people think happened to Chief Crowfoot. At the time he lived the Europeans had moved in and began changing the way of life of the First Nations people. For example, they had brought with them new diseases like Small Pox which were killing many First Nations people. Also the buffalo were disappearing and many of the First Nations people were starving. Chief Crowfoot saw this happening and knew he had to help. The Canadian government introduced treaty 7 seven
He died in 25/4/1890. Out of all the other chiefs; he was chosen to sign treaty 7. Crowfoot did not think that the treaty was fair. He asked the government some questions like, “will you light your money on fire.” The government said “no” Crowfoot said well we won’t give you our land it will get too crowded. He went to ask the other chiefs if he should sign treaty 7.
He signed Treaty 7 on September 12th 1877.
What are crowfoots Values?
Crowfoot valued family, truth, peace, and
Helping each other. He showed some of these things when someone killed his brother he planned and started a war. He valued truth because he ran a battery of test on Sir John A. MacDonald. He valued peace because he made peace with many people like the Cree and Father Lacombe. He was a much respected leader of Blackfoot tribe.
