FATHER ALBERT LACOMBE THE FRENCH MISSIONARY
Early life
Father Lacombe was born in June 13 1827. At that time his parents were farmers so he spent most of his early life on the family farm. In 1827-1916 Father Lacombe built bridges so that pack horses could carry goods across the sturgeon river to and from Edmonton between places, people and periods of history.
As a priest
He started the first church in Alberta as a Roman Catholic priest. He left Québec and went to the prairies in 1845.
Father Lacombes death
He died in 1916 in Midnapore, a small village on the prairies but these days Midnapore is a suburb in Calgary.
Keeping Peace
Father Lacombe came to the prairies to help the North West Mounted Police keep peace with the natives, help them care for their new troops and learn about God.
Caring for Orphans
Father Lacombe was a caring priest he built a school for orphans and looked after them and taught them to read and right.
Values
Father Lacombe valued lots of things like his job, people around him, keeping peace between the Cree and Blackfoot and children he absolutely loved children and that’s why he built an orphanage and looked after many children.
The disappearance of the buffalo
Imagine not having any food for days even weeks. father Lacombe went on buffalo hunts with the Metis people and he knew there were not many buffalo left soon the Metis people would die. So in 1861 father Lacombe helped the Metis people begin a settlement in St. Albert. then he helped some Metis people become farmers. He did this so that the Metis people would be able to grow food after the buffalo had disappeared.
