Chief Crowfoot
Have you
ever wondered when Chief Crowfoot lived.
Chief Crowfoot lived in the 1800’s when the early settlers were
arriving. Buffalo herds were
dying because there the Hudson Bay Company wanted buffalo hides for jackets
which caused over hunting. Year after year millions of buffalo were
killed and after about ten years the bones were shipped east to be burned or be
ground up for fertilizer. Soon the buffalo were almost extinct. That was almost
the end of the great buffalo hunts.
A treaty was signed in 1877 which was a contract that gave the Government
land and the First Nations useful farming tools such as plows, shovels and
rakes.As well as Crowfoot, there
were some missionaries that persuaded the First Nations to sign the
treaty.
