Timeline
Van Horne was born in 1843 and died in 1915. He started working on railroads in 1857. From 1895 to 1915 he was a Governor of McGill University. Van Horne supervised the building of the first Canadian railway that went across the country in 1888.
Railway
The rail way was important in the settlement and development of the western Canada because without it people wouldn’t be able to go anywhere. Because of Van Horne’s work on the cross county railway people could travel across the country.
Values
I thought he was a very hard worker because he spent most of his life working on railroads. He always had a vision of the future and had a plan for everything he made. Everyone knew him for his creativity and his enthusiasm.
Honors
There is a school in Vancouver named after van Horne, Sir William van Horne elementary school. There are also streets named for van Horne. In 2011 van Horne was featured in the Rocky Mountain Express, a 45 minute IMAX film about the building of the CPR.
C.P.R.
The colony of British Columbia became the sixth province of Canada. The railway joined it to the rest of the country. It was the only way people could travel across the country and it helped settle Western Canada. It was one of the most powerful companies in Canada for many years.
