Punjabi Culture, by Janiya
My name is Janiya. I am investigating the Punjabi culture because my family background is Punjabi, which is a province in India and 300 kilometers from Delhi, the capital of India. My family came to Alberta because my parents wanted to explore the world so they moved to Canada. They also wanted better education and more opportunities. They first moved to Toronto and my father did his MBA. In 2009 we moved to Alberta for better obs. Now we love Calgary, my aunt loves here and we love to make trips to the Rockies. Unique things about the Punjabi culture are that the families are very close. Grandparents also love together so it is called a joint family system. Most of the time mother’s cook for the whole family. We go to our temple, which is called a Gurudwara. In the Gurudwara your head has to be covered and no shoes are allowed to be worn. For special occasions there is a community food called langer. The Punjab food is very yummy. The well known food, Butter chicken and naan, comes from Punjab.
The Punjabi cultural group is unique by there cultural clothing. Women wear Punjabi suits; top (kurta), bottom (salwar), and scarf (dupatta). Punjabi men have long beards, and wear turbans. Even women have long hair, like me.
I think the diverse cultures in Alberta are important because if there wasn’t any diversity it wouldn’t be very fun because you wouldn’t be able to learn anything new.
