Franco-Albertan Culture, by Brenna
Lately in class I have been studying Francophone culture. Here are some unique things I have learned……Cirque De Soleil comes from the French people. There are also Francophone schools. In addition, there are some Francophone communities. Another thing is that there are lots of French named places in Alberta, such as… St. Paul, Provost, Lacombe, Leduc, Lac la Biche and many more. Francophone people’s first language is French. Also many married women keep their maden names from their fathers. Another thing is that acting is popular in the Francophone culture. Also some Francophones go to church on Sundays and speak French.
Now I will share ways that Francophones share their culture…. In the Francophone culture, there are lots of parades and dances. Also there are French holidays. Another thing is that there are lots of French stories. Also the French use hand signals as well as words. The reason the French came to Alberta is for business and land. Unfortunately, some time after they arrived the Americans, First Nations and the English.

Franco-Albertan Culture, by Lia
I am Lia and I am investigating the French culture because my mom’s side is mostly French and I am interested in Francophones after hearing Mr. Boulianne’s unique story. The Francophones originally came to Alberta for business opportunities and cheap land. But unfortunately, soon after they arrived, the British people, the First Nations, and the Americans wanted the land too. So a series of wars started and after many years, the British people won and divided the land. The Francophones settled to live in Quebec. Some unique aspects of the French culture include that the language French is spoken in many different places. Many Francophone women keep their last names from their fathers. Acting is a popular activity in the Francophone culture. Many Francophones grow up in communities with other Francophones and their first language is usually French. How do Francophones express their culture? They speak French and when they speak English, it is with a charming French accent. Francophones get together for special festivals to celebrate for a variety of reasons. Lots of French stories come from the Francophone culture and beliefs. French dances and French music are another big way of sharing the French culture. Many Francophones are Catholic so they go to church to pray in French. Why is diversity important? Diversity is important because if everything is the same, the world would be very boring with everyone believing in the same things and wearing the same clothes. If there were just a few other people who believed in different things than their beliefs probably wouldn’t be accepted.

Franco-Albertan Culture, by Ava
I am Ava and I am investigating French culture because I am interested in Francophone culture and my dad has some French background because he is from New Brunswick. The Francophone people first came to Alberta for business opportunities and for the land, as well as a sense of adventure! Some unique aspects of the French culture are: The beautiful buildings, houses, and towers such as the Eiffel tower that exist in France. Their language is really obvious because no other place speaks it only if they heard it either at places other than France or, somewhere French people have immigrated to like Quebec, Africa, etc.! Some ways the French culture share who they are is that they have Carnivals that are in French language and that celebrate the French culture. There is this interesting Maple syrup tradition, is when you find fresh clean snow, and you lie Maple syrup on the snow, and role a popsicle sticks on the Maple syrup. (YUMMY!) They have such good food like crepes and croissants, etc.! “I am making myself hungry! They have a sweet language like… (“bonjour, comment cava?”).
I think the diverse cultures in Alberta are important because you learn more about other cultures and other important people or just amazing people like me. There are so many areas in Canada, which is fantastic, because you can learn about different people in the world. You also get to taste the amazing different foods like the croissant and crepes I was talking about, AND you get to learn how to speak different languages like French and Mandarin.
