German Culture, by Georgia
I am Georgia and I am investigating the German culture Because my dad is German and whenever I do a school project, and we have the chance to pick a culture, I chose German. Why did the Germans come to Canada? The Germans came to resettle in Alberta because of the war they resettled as Refugees.
What are some unique and interesting parts of the German culture? Germany has sixteen states. Germany is one of the largest countries in Europe. Germany is known for making very nice cars. A common German celebration is fall fest, on fall fest they drink lots of beer. Germans are known for making very good beer. Germans favorite stories are Hansel and Gretel, the frog prince, snow white and Rumpelstiltskin. Most people in Germany are Christian. The Christmas tree tradition came from Germany. Germany is known for making great sausage. Did you know that more than 95% of the population in Germany speaks German? Christianity is the main religion, with 65-70% of the population in Germany. Serbian is spoken in eastern Germany.
How does the German express their unique culture? How do we see this in Alberta? For special events, they wear lederhosen and a drindle for the girls. At German festivals like Octoberfest, the food they eat Blutenversten which is a type of sausage, pumpkin bread, pretzels, cabbage, pork is also liked in Germany braised pork hock and pork stomach are a few different pork dishes. Octoberfest is a very popular German festival that is celebrated with large parties all around Alberta that involve eating and dancing. Also, there is a large and interesting German pavilion at the Heritage Festival in Edmonton every year.

German Culture, by Claire
I am Claire and I am investigating the German culture because some of my family is German and it would be nice to learn more about it. There are many unique aspects of the German culture. They make good cars to sell and also delicious beer to drink. Germany has a nick name which is ‘land der ditcher und danker’ which means land of poets and thinkers. German people value order, privacy, and being on time. Some of the best food in Germany is pumpernickel bread, pretzels, many Christmas cookies, sausage, roast beef, bread dumplings and sauerkraut. Germans express who they are in many different ways. Some of these forms of expression are that they like to buy fast cars! They enjoy stories like Hansel and Gretel and RumpelstiltskinTop of FormBottom of Form . The Germans like to tell Legends about the past and they also have many famous scientists.
I think diversity is good because, we get to learn about different cultures instead of our own, it would be boring if we were all the same, different cultures means new interesting things and we always learn about others.

German Culture, by Jaxon
I am Jaxon and I am investigating the German culture because some of my grandparents were born in Germany. Some unique aspects of the German culture are Germany is one of the largest countries in Europe. Octoberfest is a German celebration where they drink lots and lots of beer. Some other German celebrations are new years, Epiphany, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Easter Sunday, Labor day, Assumption of the virgin Mary, Day of German unity, Reformation, All saint’s day, Day of prayer and Repentance, 2ND Christmas day. Some German stories are Hansel and Gretel, Snow white, Frog prince and Rumpelstiltskin. Most people in Germany are Christian. The Christmas tree tradition started in Germany. Some ways the German culture shows who people are include the fact that German people wear unique clothing like lederhosen for boys and dirndl’s for girls. Some of the food they eat include bluetenverstine (sausage), pretzels, roast beef, dumplings and sauerkraut. Germans like food and they have their own taste for different kinds of food.
I think that the diverse cultures in Alberta are important because having diverse cultures in Alberta that would mean there are many interesting people and not very much different kinds of food and clothing and celebrations. Also that would not be nice for refugees with no home.

Scottish Culture, by Jonathan
I am Jonathan and I am investigating the Scottish culture because my dad has some Scottish history. Some unique aspects of the Scottish culture are that the Scottish wear kilts and each clan has a different patterns of fabric that their kilts are made of, this is called their tartan.
The Scottish also celebrate Robbie Burns night every January 25th. The event is in celebration of the life and work of their famous poet, Robbie Burns. At this event they also serve the famous Scottish dish called Haggis. Haggis is sheep’s heart, liver and lungs cooked with oatmeal and spices cooked in an animal’s stomach. At the event they also play their famous instrument the bagpipe. Bagpipes are wind instruments that are played at celebrations.
Highland dancing is a style of solo dancing that is an important part of the Scottish culture. This dancing style is usually preformed with bagpipes playing.
Scottish culture also has sports games that they preform all over the world called Highland Games. In Scotland these games are preformed in the spring and summer to celebrate their Celtic roots. The stone put is the famous of the games, but other are the caber toss and the Scottish hammer throw. All the participants wear a kilt with bagpipes playing in the distance.
One of the most important medical discoveries were due to a Scottish Doctor, Alexander Fleming who in 1928 discovered penicillin, one of the most widely used antibiotics in the world.
Many Scottish folks moved to Canada and settled in Alberta. Every year all over Alberta you can see Highland Games preformed in the summer. Robbie Burns night is also celebrated all over Alberta every January.
I believe the diverse cultures in Alberta are important because everyone gets to know and experience how different cultures thinks, their beliefs, what their values are, and how they contribute to our biodiversity as a human race.
Scottish Culture, by Ava
The culture I am learning about is Scottish culture. A way you can see Scottish Culture in Alberta is that some Scottish people have a Scottish accent for example they say Scotland like this: “Scottlanden”. The Scottish people come from Europe and traveled across Canada. Also, each Scottish family has a Scotland title for their crest.
Another way you can see Scottish culture in Alberta is Scottish people wear a kilt or the men play traditional bagpipes sometimes at the Highland Games. They also have traditional foods there like lamas and goats. Some Scottish people they buy a long bread stick but the call it a bogut which is also a very traditional thing. At the Highland Games, the most famous instrument is a bagpipe and they use a bagpipe for the celebrations and in food markets. Also, they have country dances and they wear traditional Scottish clothes and use bass drums, bagpipes, flutes and also recorders.
Nigerian Culture, by Timi
My name is Timi I am investigating the Nigerian culture because my whole family is Nigerian. My family came to Alberta because they wanted better jobs and better education for me and my brothers. I imagine this is the same reason for many other Nigerian families. Some unique aspects of the Nigerian culture are that Nigerians are very loud and vocal. The cultures traditional clothing is also very colorful. Some of the ways Nigerian culture share who they are is by showing what they feel as they all have a strong personal opinion on different things. They also share who they are by their diversity and how they are interested in including other cultures. In addition, the Nigerian people are extremely talkative, like me! If you’ve ever been to a Nigerian party, you cannot hear yourself think! They are also a multi-religious culture and the two major religions are Muslim and Christian.
I think the diverse cultures in Alberta are important because if everything was the same you wouldn’t learn anything new about other cultures and you wouldn’t see the world from a different perspective. Also Alberta wouldn’t look the same as it does now because everybody would see the same looking people everyday if we had only one culture. The people would also have the same accent and same language.
Polish Culture, by Rayne
Cześć (Hi) I found Polish culture fascinating! After you read this I hope you do to! Polish people have their own language called Polish. Many Polish people are Christian. One Polish food is a perogi which is a dough wrap with food inside such as meat, cheese and vegetables. One of Poland’s celebrations is Dożynki in English known as the Harvest Festival. At the Harvest Festival, there is authentic polish food, live music, folk dancing and music.
Some ways we can see Polish culture in Alberta are…there is a Harvest Festival every year in Edmonton, also there is a Polish school in Edmonton called the Maria Chrzanowska school. In addition, there is a Polish cultural centre in Calgary. Also there is a Polish-Christian church in Calgary and there is also one in Edmonton. Now that you know all about Polish culture you might want to learn more.
I think diversity is important in Alberta because it teaches us other cultures and that makes life more interesting. We learn French, Italian, Spanish and Indian, and Chinese and many more including Zulu from South Africa. Also diversity is important because if we didn’t have unique clothes for formal occasions it wouldn’t be interesting. If we didn’t have different languages it would be pretty boring and we wouldn’t be able to learn anything new.
Ukrainian Culture, by Sawyer (пильщик)
Привіт.
The culture I will be talking about today is the Ukrainian culture. Some interesting parts of this culture is the food they eat, for example perogies, borscht soup/ beat soup, cabbage rolls and kolbasa. Another reason why the Ukrainian culture is unique and special is how they are very religious and they celebrate Easter and Christmas differently then Canadians do. Also their religion is Christian. In addition, the flag has blue on the top of it and yellow on the bottom. Another reason is they make their own Easter eggs that are golden and very detailed.
Some of the reasons how we can see this culture in Alberta is you can see Ukrainian churches. There is a Ukrainian church in Calgary and you will know its Ukrainian because it will have a big dome on top of it. Vegreville has a giant pisenka that’s a Ukrainian Easter egg. The reason why Ukrainian people came to Alberta is people in Saskatchewan offered them a giant piece of land the Ukrainians came to Saskatchewan. Then they found out that Alberta has a lot of land so they came to Alberta and some people stayed in Saskatchewan. I hope you learned a lot about the Ukrainian culture.

Ukrainian Culture, by Angeline
I am Angeline and I am investigating the Ukranian culture because I thought it would be interesting to learn about and I remember some things from Grade 3. The Ukranian people first came to Alberta because of cheap land for farming. Some unique aspects of the Ukranian culture are that they do a special kind of fighting called cock fighting. They have religious celebrations called Christmas and Easter which are Christian. They celebrate New Year’s and on weddings they eat a type of special decorated bread. They decorate eggs for Easter with very fine details. Also, they have special dolls that are large on the outside and you open them and they get smaller each time. Some ways the Ukranian culture share who they are that they have Ukranian churches in Calgary and they also have brought their food, like perogies.
I think the diverse cultures in Alberta are important because If everyone has the same culture life would be boring but if we were different it will be better and would stop us from speaking different languages.
